EXHIBITIONS MARY JUDGE

Lo Studio d'Artista 2, Perugia, Italy, July 2011   [ SLIDESHOW ]  [Artist Statements]  [Interview of Artists (Italian)]

Lo Studio d’Artista 2 is the second in a series of actions (Studio 1 /May 29) conceived and implemented by Simona Frillici, in her studio situated in the historic center of the city of Perugia, Italy. Frillici felt the urgency to engage the public in a different way and decided to open her studio to another artist as a work place. Her idea was that the invited artist would not simply bring works and exhibit them but would instead stay, experience, and create in her space, in a fully encompassing way, using all aspects of the ambient, and make work expressly of, about, and for her studio. This new work would then be available to the public where it was conceived and made, transforming the studio into a creatively charged space. For Frillici this was an initiative of trust, commradery, and dialogue between artists.

Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield CT, June-Sept 2007    [ SLIDESHOW ]

Solo exhibitions of works created for the museum. Smaller cast concrete sculptures were placed throughout the space, both inside on two different levels and in the exterior. The interior gallery space included relief prints and spolvero drawings and outside this gallery I created a site specific spolvero drawing for the corridor wall, creating a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces and works.

Spazio Dinamico, San Guilano Terme & Villa Undulna, Pisa Italy 2005    [ SLIDESHOW ]

The gallery occupies an industrial loft style place of high ceilings and skylights. It presented an impressive environment for the exhibition. Works displayed includes spolvero drawings on panel, canvas and Carrara marble chosen by the artist on site at a local quarry. The largest piece was trucked down and placed outside the gallery. I worked over the surfaces of the various pieces using a black powdered pigment with various stencils. The second part of the show took place at the Spa, Villa Undulna, where we placed several pieces outdoors and also hung a group of small drawings.

Metaphor Contemporary Art, New York NY 2005    [ SLIDESHOW ]

The high ceilings, great light and concrete floor inspired me to propose a large-scale cast concrete sculpture, my first made in the US, which was sold to a major collection. Also included were works on paper and canvas and panel.   www.metaphorcontemporaryart.com

Gallery Joe, Philadelphia PA 2005    [ SLIDESHOW ]

This solo show, my second at Gallery Joe, was composed entirely of works on paper with the exception of a floor to ceiling spolvero made directly on the wall in the form of a kind of hourglass.

Concrete Laboratory, Samsoe Denmark 2004   [ SLIDESHOW ]

This work was part of an artist-in-residency where 12 artists and architects were invited to make new work in cast concrete on the Island of Samsoe, Denmark. All work was completed over a 2 week period.

IRIDE Spazio Visivo, Perugia Italy 2003   [ SLIDESHOW ]

This space in the former Jewish Ghetto of Medieval Perugia is small but strong with a large half arch midway in the gallery space. The wooden floor is unusual for these types of spaces and I worked with it, choosing sawed trees trunks, all of equal height to fill a rectangular space on the floor. The spolvero which I did on top of these was also composed of circle forms and was done in-situ.

Kentler International Drawing Space, Red Hook NY 2003   [ SLIDESHOW ]

Kentler's intimate but interesting space provided the catalyst for 3 site-specific spolvero works done directly on the wall.

Trebisonda Spazio per l'Arte Contemporanea, Perugia Italy 2002   [ SLIDESHOW ]

This former school in Perugia Italy provided a completely neutral environment and I proposed a stark, open presentation of works. Here one can see two spolvero drawings made directly on the wall, and a concrete floor piece. A series of drawings on paper were on view in the backroom. (not pictured here)

Corcoran Gallery, Washington DC 2001    [ SLIDESHOW ]

"Primary Properties" was the title of this show, Curator Jonathan P. Binstock's first as new Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. This was a two artist show, the other "artist" being twin brothers John and Joe Dumbacher. I chose fire brick in consideration of the parquet floor color and executed the spolvero over its surface in brown pigment. Both this work and the long spiral wall spolvero were designed for and completed in the gallery space. Other works included a series made using peat moss, metallic and natural pigment on handmade paper in collaboration with Master Papermaker, Paul Wong at Dieu Donne Papermill, NY.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia PA 2001    [ SLIDESHOW ]

This exhibition coincided with my first solo show at Gallery Joe in Philadelphia. A new wall was built for the large mural work I created under the skylights of the gallery. I worked with assistants to paint this directly on the wall. I also created a site specific piece on common cast concrete paving block. Other pieces included a paper work created at Dieu Donne Papermill, made with graphite powder consisting of a large image made up of 4 sheets of paper mounted side by side. I also showed a series of 10x8" spolvero drawings opposite the mural and a large multi-panel piece on the opposite end.

Gallery Joe, Philadelphia PA 2001    [ SLIDESHOW ]

This work, my first solo show at the gallery, consisted of spolvero drawings done with black and grey pigments. These pieces were done on linen mounted on board with thin layers of bluish-gray wash. The Circle Series was inspired by Arabic tile design.
