Earliest works on canvas were quite small and could be
considered miniatures. With these I developed my interest in the border
between image and object. In some works the drawing continues over the
edge off the front face of the canvas. This reinforced the object-ness
of the work. In larger scale works on canvas, texture is deployed and
plays an active role in the finished piece. As opposed to works on paper,
which seem to be spatial, canvas offers instead a "support": images are
more accessible physically to the viewer and don't need glass. Works on
canvas have textural "grounds" built of irregular layers of acrylic wash.
Archival notes: Large scale and medium scale
canvases are done on acrylic primed linen or cotton some with the addition
of collaged paper or acrylic wash. May include a backing board underneath
between stretcher and fabric. All images are fixed with Matt or Gloss fixative. |
